Would actually try to prosecute the runaway bride.
I mean isn't it enough that she ditched her 600 person wedding? She's shamed for life for heaven's sakes. Should we really spend taxpayer money to put her in jail? Seems a bit stupid to me. A bit like a bunch of cops and prosecutors looking to capitalize on a high profile humiliation. Hey doofus--how about you go arrest some white collar criminals huh?

I am not so sure I agree with you on this one. Seems like every couple of months someboday does something like this and police (and countless others) waste time looking for them. I think prosecution would have a deterrent effect (and I think it rarely does). Of course I agree she will suffer enough without the prosecution. With that said, I am on the fence. I think its a close call.
I understand your hesitation. Am I wrong that they went looking for her not because of anything she did, but because she disappeared? If she'd called 911 and said, "help, I've been kidnapped and am being held in the woods outside Galveston" I might be more inclined to agree, but her 'false' report was after she was found.
Why can't people just run away? Why can't they just escape their lives, go somewhere and start over?
We mounted a search for a woman who headed to vegas on the spur of the moment. Our bad.
If I disappear--relax, it's probably all good.
If you read the various statements by the GA and NM authorities, you understand why Porter--the guy is Georgia is just a prick. All the folks in NM said "looks she's in crisis, let's find a way to help" The guy in Georgia, says--"we need to bring her under the control of the court"
Why not leave a note? I hope you do when you choose to disappear so we know you are fine. Otherwise, we are going to look for you.
Ok,
After several conversations about this, I think I'm giving up the ghost on this one and changing my view. I still have some hesitations about prosecuting, but I'm willing to concede that this was astonishingly selfish, and something that perhaps should be deterred. That being said, the threat of prosecution is more than enough. They shouldn't actually do anything.
And BTW--thanks for your concern. It's sweet.
Just to be accurate, the cops in your picture are from the Albuquerque Police Department. They declined to press any charges against the runaway bride. Considering that the police took no actions based on the false report, I don't think any charges are really appropriate, even though her accusations against an nonexistent interracial couple are reprehensible.
I absolutely agree that the allegations were reprehensible and that they reveal her (and in a certain sense our) deep seated racism.
As for the picture--you are absolutely correct and I apologize for not captioning it better. I chose the image because I couldn't at the time find a shot of the Georgia DA, and thought that the expression of the officer closer really captured the vibe. I'm sorry about that--not sure if I should go try again to find the DA and replace the picture, or just offer this apology and explanation.
