The Canadian practice of keeping evidence out of the media is not universally approved up here, but on the whole I think it's a good thing, as you suggest. It seems to me though that it's at least as important that our prosecutors (and judges) are not elected but appointed, on what we hope is a professional basis. There is some debate about that too, but once again, on the whole, it does seem to prevent the sort of egregious pandering your piece describes.
